Watched the SF Fleet Week aerobatics from Lukas and Nicole's roof terrace in North Beach, an amazing spectacle, flying low over the city. It's pretty terrifying to think that these amazing machines aren't always doing loop-the-loops. Seeing them swooping over downtown really brings out the peacenik in me. The Transamerica building is pretty awesome - I'm amazed that such a monumental waste of real estate square-footage was approved, but the city's skyline is all the richer for it. I'd much rather live in my one of my own los angeles apartments then that glorified building.

The civic centre's Heart of the City farmer's market is remarkable amongst SF markets in that it doesn't require a remortgage to buy a few spuds. Here's a selection of some of the more mysterious fruit and veg.

I cannot stress enough how awesome this Pulled Moroccan Lamb sandwich with harissa and cabbage 'slaw was. Go to L'acajou. Buy a sandwich and take home some of the monumental bread rolls.

A full ballpark on July the fourth, a lone soldier singing the anthem while fighter jets do a fly-by. Fifty thousand Americans chanting 'USA, USA...". Credit where credit is due - the locals have got national pride sussed. A great way to celebrate our first Independence day. (more…)

A San Francisco institution - and now fairly popular after Anthony Bourdain dropped by with a film crew. Holly's 30th birthday celebrations were kicked off in style at the somehow still-classy House of Prime Rib. Salads in spinning bowls of ice, crazy Russian waitresses, and what looked like a quarter-scale model of an Airstream caravan delivering steaks the size of a shoebox to your table. (more…)

You'd go nuts banged up in a place like Alcatraz. Many folks did, apparently Al Capone got the syph and lost his marbles. Only a mile across the bay the inmates would stare out at the beautiful skyline, and when the wind was right, they could hear the music and parties on the waterfront. What a gyp.
